AWARD NOMINEE 2021

The Modern Georgian Garden, designed by Tabitha Rigden during lockdown, made it onto the shortlist for the Society of Garden Designer’s industry awards.  The garden, containing lush planting to help absorb air pollution in this central London location, was nominated in the Paper Landscape category. 

The best part?

The concept of combining old and new made this design great fun to tackle, with one of our most playful planting schemes to date – the combination of traditional formal structure with exotics gives the space a distinct identity. The central London location was unusual for our practice and we took the opportunity to research functional planting that would help absorb pollution.

What does this garden give the client?

The original garden was overlooked on all sides and had been used as something of a dumping ground – it certainly wasn’t a garden that would draw you outside! The design now compliments the architecture – the frontage has regained its Georgian grandeur and the back garden provides a private, tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the A3 out front.

Biggest Take Away?

The design demonstrates how planting can be adopted to benefit health and wellbeing, specifically by using foliage to absorb air pollution. It shows that a small city garden can still contain a high ratio of planting while satisfying the need for seating and dining areas.
