Modern Georgian London Garden
A MODERN GARDEN FOR A GEORGIAN HOUSE
Inspiration for this garden was drawn from the Georgian architecture of the house, with its symmetrical, rectilinear character and clean lines. The space has been divided into a series of ‘rooms’ by screens, a motif referencing the period interiors.
INSPIRED BY THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY PLANTHUNTERS
The planting is inspired by the Georgian ‘planthunter’ mentality – the juxtaposition of exotic species (which exploit the sheltered position) with more ‘classical’ clipped hedging and trees adds a playful twist and a bit of wow-factor.
This project was shortlisted for an award at the 2021 Society of Garden Designers Awards.
Rigden Studio’s proposal was inspired. We were so impressed with how the layout reflected the architecture of our Georgian townhouse. The plants they chose are gorgeous. We love that they, too, were inspired by the early-19th Century taste for the eclectic. The touches of exotic perfectly complement the more traditional elements.
