If we want to make a positive impact on the planet, it’s important to consider where our plants come from. Seek out and support sustainable nurseries making efforts to be greener. This includes using peat-free compost, irrigating with rainwater, and using organic practices as much as possible, as well as reducing their carbon foot print through renewable energy usage.

Many nurseries now use integrate pest-management systems such as biological controls and physical barriers rather than reaching for the pesticides. After all, the sad fact is plants treated with pesticides can actually poison the beneficial insects we’re trying to attract into our gardens.

It’s heartening to see many nurseries now using taupe-coloured plastic pots that are recyclable at the kerbside, rather than non-recyclable black ones; we’d love to see more allowing customers to return pots for re-use though. By voicing these requests and buying from sustainable nurseries with a sound green policy, we can help bring about positive change.
