A GARDEN WHICH FEELS AS THOUGH IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE
Inspiration for this garden was drawn from the surrounding countryside and the historic architecture; the garden should feel ‘at home’ in its surroundings. Key elements have been retained, such as the 17th century cobbles, and materials added to compliment the existing ones.
With the aim of creating more useable space and improving access, reclaimed York stone has been added to enhance the existing cobbles – planting pockets and rills are included, filled with plants that will naturally self-seed. This helps to soften the hardscape and gives the impression that the paving has always been there.
IMMERSED IN NATURE
New destinations have been added, including the summer house and the kitchen garden, and access routes created. We have included the optional addition of a bench – a meaningful destination and focal point at the end of the central path, somewhere to sit and enjoy the views.
A meadow has been added at the end of the site, to help assimilate the garden with the countryside beyond. An area of longer grass has been added beneath the trees either side of the garden, which can also be planted with spring bulbs – this will add volume and depth to the space, and enhance the feeling of being immersed in nature.
