HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN COMPOST
Making your own compost is a win-win: it enables you to recycle green waste while producing a probiotic for the soil. So, how to make it? Aim for a 50:50 mix of brown to green matter. Brown being dry carbon-rich elements like twigs and cardboard, and green being vegetable matter like grass clippings and peelings. Chop everything into small pieces and turn the heap every few months – the oxygen will speed up decomposition. If you’ve ever studied a compost heap (please don’t judge!), you’ll have noticed lots of tiny red worms. They’re busy burrowing, breaking everything down and helping to aerate it. Adding compost to the soil encourages other earthworms to do similar – and, together with the good bacteria, it will help nourish your plants.
