GARDEN DESIGN JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 2025
I was delighted to chat with garden writer Jodie Jones for Garden Design Journal about the thinking behind my redesign of The Plough, Shiplake and, more broadly, about the realities of contemporary garden design in a commercial setting and functionality, guest flow and operational efficiency can (and should) sit comfortably alongside atmosphere, planting design and aesthetic ambition.
We discussed the importance of designing without formula, challenging expectations such as the necessity of a lawn in a pub garden, and how thoughtful spatial planning can make even a highly programmed space feel relaxed and immersive. Sustainabillity and environmentally aware design that works resourcefully with existing site conditions were key themes and it provided an opportunity to reflect on how good garden design is not just about aesthetics, but about shaping human experiences.
