ONE-SKIP BUILDS – ARE THEY REALLY ACHIEVABLE?

The one-skip build is like the holy grail when it comes to building an eco-friendly garden design: minimising waste to such an extent that it fits into just one skip! Some landscaping contractors may raise an eyebrow at the very notion, but – with thought and planning – it can often be achieved. Most of the spoil removed at the start of a garden re-design falls into two categories: 1) hard standing (old pavers, concrete, bricks etc) and 2) soil.

The key to a one-skip build is to re-use as much spoil on site as possible. Whether by hiring a crusher to break up an old patio and re-distributing it as a base for new path, or by banking up excess soil to create an element of landform. Also, by removing less waste from site, you can avoid the extra carbon emissions caused by transporting it off site. It also means less need for bringing new materials in, all of which helps reduce your carbon footprint. Yet another way of achieving an eco-friendly garden design and build. The possibilities are endless and, by way of an added incentive, less waste means less associated cost!
