London GEORGIAN Rill Garden
A GARDEN INSPIRED BY THE EAST INDIA DOCKS
The inspiration for this garden comes from the nearby East India Docks, which would have been a major trade port in the Georgian period. Rills and a shallow pool represent the canals linking the basin with the English Channel.
Introducing additional levels help provide a feeling of enclosure and enhance the view from the house, while the water makes its own journey through the space, from the trough at the far end to the pool outside the building.
MAKING THE MOST OF THE MICROCLIMATE
Using the microclimate created by the wall, layers of exotic plants are mixed with perennials and ornamental grasses to provide lush year-round structure. Living walls and a living roof brings the planting closer to the building, blurring the boundary between garden and house and creating ‘softer’ views from directly within.
