A ‘BORROWED LANDSCAPE’

Inspiration was drawn from the trees surrounding the plot, which evoke a woodland feel. The connection to this ‘borrowed landscape’ is reinforced by adding trees into the garden. These help to screen from the neighbours, providing a private green oasis. The lawn replicates a tranquil glade concealed from those outside it.

Linear repetition brings a sense of order to the space, accentuated by the pergola and the plank path. There is a tension between formal and informal throughout the garden – the randomly placed clipped topiary and the row of new trees provide year-round structure, while the scheme is softened by naturalistic woodland planting and climbers. The interplay of light and shade within the garden serves to heighten this contrast, and a palette of blues and purples adds further interest.

A GARDEN TO ENTERTAIN IN

The garden is designed to facilitate an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, to be enjoyed well into the evening. With a generous seating area set apart from the dining terrace, the spaces can be used as separate ‘rooms’, or as one. A moving water feature provides a focal point from the house and adds to the tranquility.
