5 TOP TIPS FOR GARDEN DESIGN
We would of course always advocate getting some help with design form a pro, however for those of you who’d like to have a go – or simply find out more about how us Garden designers think, here are some useful tips to consider. there are naturally a whole host of practical considerations too, but here we’ve focused on the visual.
1. MOOD AND AMBIENCE
How do you want the garden to make you feel? Do you want a calm, contemplative environment for instance? And if so, aspire to use your ‘new’ garden?
2. BORROW FROM THE LANDSCAPE
A garden can mirror the surrounding landscape. Is there a surrounding landscape type? Granted this is harder to answer if you’re in central London, but if that’s the case what type of landscape do you want to emulate? Woodland, meadow/prairie, desert, Mediterranean. Then it’s a question of honing down on what exactly makes gives that landscape type it’s character. Consider the height of the trees or plants, the density of planting, the types of plants and apply this to your space. A pared down version is generally most effective, distill the essence of what creates that mood (unless you happen to have the space to plant an entire woodland).
3. DISTILL, DISTILL, DISTILL
(and we’re not talking about whiskey production).
